Ballina Ocean Pool (pool campaign)

April 1, 2017 by

Ballina, NSW, Australia

The campaign for the creation of an ocean pool at Ballina’s Shelly Beach on Australia’s east coast began some years back.

2014

Since 2014, the Ballina Ocean Pool Committee  (https://www.facebook.com/BallinaOceanPool/ ) has been working to address the environmental and planning matters associated with the construction of the proposed ocean pool. Surveyors, marine biologists, marine engineers and experts from Southern Cross University have been involved with this project.

2015
Ballina Ocean Pool Committee incorporated.

2016

In August 2016, Ballina Council withdrew the funding it had allocated towards the cost of preparing reports on the engineering and coastal processes relevant to the creation of an ocean pool at Ballina. Representatives of Ballina Shire have since sought funding for these reports from the New South Wales state government.

2017
A GoFundMe crowdfunding campaign  https://www.gofundme.com/ballina-ocean-pool was launched in February to raise the $50, 000 needed to complete engineering and design reports needed to take this project to the next stage.

Port Macquarie (phantom pool), NSW, Australia

December 21, 2015 by

Port Macquarie does not yet have an ocean pool. Despite many decades of discussion about construction of an ocean pool, the pool remains a phantom.

2016
The Port Macquarie-Hastings Council is paying close attention to developments regarding the
proposed ocean pool at Ballina.

The survey run by Port Macquarie-Hastings Council to help it develop a Disability Inclusion Action Plan prompted Kathryn Butler to send a letter to a local newspaper explaining how an ocean pool could benefit people with disabilities. Her letter expanded on one facet of the 15-point list of benefits of an ocean pool posted on the Ocean Pool for Port Macquarie’s Facebook page early in November 2016.

To highlight the appeal of ocean pools, Ocean Pool for Port Macquarie has been posting images of existing ocean pools on its Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/pmqtidalpool.com.au/) .

The Forster Ocean Baths are set in a charming park at the southern end of Forster Beach at the base of Second Head. There is direct access to this ocean pool from the beach.

The Forster Ocean Baths is a rare case of a pay-to-use pool created with unemployment relief funds and the only ocean pool on the New South Wales coast operated  in tandem with a ‘dance casino’ (local use of the term ‘casino’ did not imply a facility for gambling).

North Street, Forster, NSW, 2428, Australia
