1872
The steamship Quanza struck rocks off East London’s Orient Beach.
1904
Two tidal bathing pools were created on the rocky shore that had proved disastrous for the Quanza. One pool was reserved for men, the other for women and children.
2010
The modern non-tidal pools at Orient Beach offered safe swimming and bathing, The Quanza pools could only be glimpsed in old photographs.
