Oliver Scarlin (full name Oliver Scarlin Chennels) lives in Stellenbosch, South Africa. His work Tidescapes (shown below) was awarded AU$300 prize money in the 2017 Sheridan Evans Award for art relating to ocean pools. That work was a composite image of his oil paintings of some of Cape Town’s ocean pools.
Oliver believes his interest in ocean pools:
…. really began in my early adulthood. I remember a friend taking me to a hidden tide pool, a real gem of a place. The mystery of the structure appealed to me – it seemed almost sacred. As I began painting full-time, it seemed natural to revisit that particular spot – and that lead to me seeking out other pools. There are some truly beautiful ones in the area. I have enjoyed the ritual of painting, then diving into a pool afterwards. I hope to continue exploring them as a theme in my work.
